First we did a quick diagnostic walk-through to establish what needed to be done. Besides some small clearing, the top trail was virtually intact. The biggest problem we found at the lower portions of the OWLZ was the drainage and water run-off problem. We decided that the best solution to these problems was three-fold.
Volunteers also cleared the paths of dead grass, weeded the classroom areas, spread new mulch into the upper entrance area, and located new logs to use as lining logs around classrooms and paths.
- Dig a drainage ditch and berm between the trail connection and the beginning of the mulch.
- Shift the Hilltop-side row of logs lining the "main thoroughfare" in, making the path skinnier and providing room for a natural drainage ditch.
- Dig pipes into the ground near where the drainage ditch begins to level out, pushing the water out to the natural creek between the School and the Church property.
